WELCOME TO IRON CITY AND BOOMTOWN
Iron City is the beating, rust-streaked heart of the mid-wasteland. It’s the place where freedom and desperation collided so hard that they fused into something remarkable. Some say Iron City was forged by the climax of the Highway War, a legendary rebellion against the chains of slavery and oppression. Others will tell you it’s more practical than that; a nexus of highways and railways, built because the survivors needed a place to rebuild. Whatever story you believe, the truth is simple: Iron City endures.
Here, Survivors are doing what they do best, scraping by, building something out of nothing, and arguing loudly while doing it. Iron City is a patchwork of factions and unions, each one holding the threads of survival in calloused hands. You’ll find builders, farmers, scavengers, mercenaries, and bureaucrats all trying to keep this fragile machine running. Is it perfect? Not even close. But Iron City isn’t about perfection, it’s about resilience.
If Iron City is the heart, Boomtown is the wild, chaotic pulse.
Boomtown is technically an “auxiliary district” of Iron City, but let’s not kid ourselves; it’s a world all its own. Think of Boomtown as Iron City’s scrappy little sibling. Originally, BoomTown was a bold experiment: “What if we expand Iron City’s reach? What if we tame the wasteland?” Turns out, the wasteland doesn’t like being tamed. Boomtown isn’t thriving, but it isn’t giving up, either. It’s a crossroads, a marketplace, and a stage for some of the most desperate and fascinating people you’ll ever meet. It’s where flaws and ambitions are laid bare in the dust and static.
If you want to understand Boomtown, you might start with its economy. In Boomtown, we mostly barter, and the only currency that matters is film - celluloid film reels. The Tel’Veracians, a mysterious faction composed mostly of Lascarians, control this economy. They treat film like sacred text, cataloging and stamping each reel with their seal of authenticity. Their universal willingness to trade for film scraps has made film the de facto currency of the region. The salt caverns beneath Boomtown and Iron City held some untold bounty of ancient film reels, and prospectors and treasure hunters make a living tracking down and finding these reels in employee basements, bombed out pawn shops, and every once and a while, a new found entrance into the Veracian Depths.
Boomtown attracts survivors of all stripes. It’s not just a place for the desperate; it’s a place for the ambitious, the curious, and the downright stubborn. Here are a few flavors you might find. Scavengers are the backbone of Boomtown, which was originally built as a prime scavenging location. These folks comb through ruins and sift through dust and debris for anything of value, including metal scraps, forgotten relics, and yes, those precious reels of film. Every find is a gamble, but the payoff can mean the difference between surviving and thriving. You’ll find mostly traders here; they’re the ones trying to squeeze an extra meal out of a half-rusted gadget. The Tel’Veracians often trade here, inspecting reels like jewelers examining fine gems. Drifters and mercenaries come looking for work, or an escape. Need someone to guard a caravan? Break up a fight? Navigate the twisted rail lines? There’s always someone in Boomtown who’s willing to pay.
Everyone here is hustling, but the hustle isn’t just about survival. It’s about carving out a place in a world that feels like it’s always on the verge of collapse.
Boomtown isn’t big, but it’s packed with places where stories begin and end: The Dry County Taverns: Boomtown is technically a dry zone, but speakeasies don’t care. Here, moonshine flows, secrets are traded, and alliances are forged and shattered. The Trainyards: A rusted labyrinth of tracks and derelict cars. Maintained by the Iron Rail Collective, the trains are a primary mode of travel around the region, and a reasonable level of safety for those that choose to live on the mobile settlements pulled by the steam engines.
