Submit Your character Background
Every survivor in Boomtown has a story. Where did your character come from? What shaped them into who they are today? What drives them forward in this brutal, post-apocalyptic world? We encourage every player to submit a character background—not just because we love reading them, but because it deepens your connection to the setting and helps you think about how your character fits into the world.
Why Submit a Background?
It strengthens your character’s place in the world. Whether they were raised in Iron City, scavenged the wastes alone, or grew up with close ties in their faction, your backstory gives you a foundation to build on.
It helps us understand what excites you. Your background tells us what kind of stories you want to explore—whether it’s survival, politics, personal rivalries, or something else entirely.
It gives us fuel for storytelling. While we can’t promise your backstory will become part of a major plot, we might just use it for something devious. You never know when a forgotten past might come knocking…
Character Highlights
To help us understand who your character is, tell us three key moments, choices, or beliefs that define them. These don’t need to be long—just enough to give us a glimpse into what shaped them.
The Inciting Incident – What event set them on this path?
Example: "Watched his best friend turn into a raider and had to put him down."The Defining Belief – What core principle drives them?
Example: "Believes that debt is the strongest currency, and everyone owes someone."The Unfinished Business – What loose end haunts them?
Example: "Carries around a bullet meant for someone far away."
Guidelines for Submission
To keep backgrounds useful, immersive, and within scope, please follow these guidelines:
Keep it brief. Highlight important points or people with bullet points and try to keep everything under a page.
Stay genre-appropriate. Your story should fit within the post-apocalyptic setting of Dystopia Rising.
Keep it in-setting. While your character might have history beyond Boomtown, we can’t influence other chapters’ settings or stories, and we can’t shape the broader wasteland outside the scope of our game.
Focus your story. If there’s something you want us to build on, keep it narrow in scope—big, world-altering plots are outside our reach, but personal conflicts, faction struggles, and local mysteries are perfect.
