BoomTown at Wildwood

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Boomtown is set at Wildwood Outdoor Education Center, a camp site and program dedicated to bringing kids outside to learn and grow. Wildwood’s mission focuses on turning summer into a season of learning, youth development, and outdoor adventure for low-income Kansas City youth, providing them with opportunities to build resilience, teamwork, and confidence through nature.

For Dystopia Rising: Kansas, Wildwood will transform into Boomtown, offering players access to modern amenities while maintaining the immersive experience of the game. The site includes two climate-controlled cabins with electricity, private showers, restrooms, as well as large indoor and outdoor spaces for gameplay including player-hosted gatherings, combat, camping, and more.

The site currently features 50 beds across two cabins, each equipped with private stalls and showers. There’s also ample shaded ground for tent camping. Whether you prefer the comfort of a cabin or the full wasteland experience of camping, you’ll find a space that fits your playstyle.

Tenting in Boomtown

Tent camping is available for genre-looking tents in a designated area located lakeside (refer to the map here). If you are unsure if this applies to your tent, send us an email with a pic or detailed description of your set up. Glaringly non-genre tents will be asked to relocate. There is power for tents (genre and non-genre) located on the south side of the basketball pavilion. Please be considerate when sharing this resource. Non-genre tents can find plenty of space for tents on the far north side of the field (please refer to the site map).

Here are our tenting guidelines:

  1. Some tenting locations may be restricted to only genre-looking tents to help set the tone of the area. Currently, genre tenting is designated along the lake. If you do not have a genre-looking tent, you may not set up in this area. You can check with Staff to see if this applies to your tent.

  2. The only power available for tents is along the south side of the pavilion. Please be courteous to other players when sharing this resource.

  3. We will never enter your tent. If we need something checked, we will engage the owner of the tent so they are present and able to assist.

  4. Tents in play space are still subject to in-character attack and theft.

  5. During attacks on a tent, the Guide overseeing the mod will start a 2 minute timer. If the occupants are not out by the end of the timer the occupants will start automatically taking damage/attacks per non-combat guidelines. This timer may be extended at Guide discretion.

  6. Theft requires the Guide to locate the tent owner. The tent owner will retrieve and show the Guide the carded items that were in the tent. Theft in a tent follows normal theft rules (requiring pickpocket usages).

  7. Item Cards including doors, locks, or traps may be put on large, genre tents. They must be resolved before attacks or theft may occur. Once the door, lock, or trap cards are resolved, the 2 minute timer will begin. Room Augments may not be used on a tent.

Medical Sleep & Out-of-Character Sleep

We have very limited capacity for medical sleep, located in Wells Cabin, which also serves as our medical care area. Players needing medical sleep must provide a doctor’s note in advance of the event weekend, and beds are first come, first served based on availability. Wells Cabin also has a refrigerator designated for medicine storage, prioritizing players who require temperature-sensitive medication. Email us to request medical sleep.

As the primary medical care area, Wells Cabin is also the place where players can take a short break from the game, receive care for injuries, or recover if needed.

The cabins are winterized, and climate controlled. The fire pits are available for our use, subject to burn bans. There are two kitchens on site players are welcome to use. Both include a refrigerator and microwave and are first come, first serve. We ask players be courteous to others in the kitchen as it is a small space and that resource is limited. Please remember to clean up after yourself. These are the only two kitchens we have access to at this time.

Bunk/Tent Flagging System

To help maintain safety and clarity during game, we use a visible flagging system for tents and bunks. Players should tie a bandana or piece of cloth in specific, visible locations. For tents, this should be placed at the main entrance. For bunks, the flag should be tied to the bunk support facing the walking area and positioned at the level you are sleeping (top or bottom bunk). These placements are important so NPCs and fellow players can quickly recognize and respect your status.

A blue flag indicates that you are new to the game—please give these players some leeway and avoid engaging them at full intensity.
An orange flag, used only on bunks, means “do not hit me while I’m sleeping”—allow the player time to get up and ready before engagement.
A green flag indicates that the player is OOC (out-of-character) sleeping and should not be engaged at all.

Green flag status requires Owner approval and is only granted in specific situations such as early morning shifts, medical rest, or significant sleep issues. Players are responsible for bringing their own orange and green bandanas, and are encouraged to use glow sticks or similar colored markers for added visibility during night-time modules.
