Your Guide to Surviving in Boomtown
A 39-hour immersive LARP is unlike anything most people have ever experienced. From Friday at 9 PM to Sunday at noon, the world outside ceases to exist—you step into a fully realized post-apocalyptic society, where survival isn’t just about fighting off the undead, but also about navigating the dangers of a fractured world. The game doesn’t pause. From the moment it begins, you are in character, making real-time decisions that can shape your fate. You’ll barter for supplies, take on jobs, forge alliances, fight off raiders, and immerse yourself in a world where every action has consequences. The days are long, the nights are dangerous, and the wasteland doesn’t sleep just because you do.
It’s thrilling, intense, and deeply rewarding—but it’s also a lot. The combination of physical endurance, deep roleplay, boffer combat, and nonstop immersion can push players in ways they never expected. You’ll be moving, thinking, and reacting as your character for nearly two full days, engaging in both scripted and unscripted encounters that challenge your skills, wits, and survival instincts. This experience is fully in-universe, meaning every interaction, battle, and negotiation happens within the story. Newcomers often underestimate just how much energy, focus, and preparation it takes to stay in character, navigate the setting, and keep up with the action all weekend long. That’s why coming in prepared makes all the difference.
Before game begins, take time to read up on the world, the rules, and the core mechanics so you’re not scrambling to learn everything on the spot. Even a basic understanding of how the setting works and how your character fits into it will make a huge difference in your experience. Having a clear character concept helps too—you don’t need a fully fleshed-out backstory, but knowing what drives your character will guide your decisions in-game. Once the weekend starts, you’ll be thrown into the deep end, and the more you lean into the story, engage with other players, and embrace the world, the more rewarding your first game will be.
Immersion means you’re in character the entire time, so expect to stay in the story from the moment game begins until it ends. That means no breaking character, no checking your phone, and no stepping out of the world unless it’s absolutely necessary. The deeper you commit, the better the experience—for you and for everyone around you. At the same time, remember that you don’t have to know everything right away. It’s okay to ask for help, and veteran players and staff are more than happy to guide new players through their first game.
The physical side of a LARP like this shouldn’t be underestimated either. Combat is boffer-based, meaning you’ll be swinging weapons, dodging attacks, and moving through the environment in real-time. It’s easy to get caught up in the action and overexert yourself, so pacing is key. Hydration is critical—it’s shockingly easy to forget to drink enough water when you’re deep in the game. Bring extra food, snacks, and high-energy meals because you’ll be burning more calories than you think. Weather can also be unpredictable, so pack accordingly—layers for the cold, breathable fabrics for the heat, and extra socks no matter what.
Socially, the game is built on player interaction, teamwork, and story-driven choices. You’ll need allies, and the best way to find them is to get involved. Take jobs, join groups, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself. Disputes, fights, and dangers will arise, but conflict is always managed within the game world—combat has rules, and so does survival. If you find yourself in a tough spot, play it out, but also remember to use safety mechanics like the OK Check-In system to make sure everyone is having a good experience.
Most importantly, don’t stress about doing it perfectly. Everyone was a first-time player once. Mistakes will happen, and that’s part of the fun. The best way to enjoy the game is to let go, dive in, and embrace the chaos. It’s going to be an exhausting, unforgettable weekend—but if you come prepared, it’ll be one hell of a ride.
